WHAT IS CBD?

Open tab

CBD stands for Cannabidiol and is one of at least 113 chemical compounds, referred to as cannabinoids found in the cannabis family of plants. The cannabis family refers to the non-psychoactive hemp plant and the marijuana plant. Sopris Health & Wellness extracts its Full-Spectrum CBD from the hemp plant, also known as cannabis sativa, which is one of the oldest domesticated crops—even George Washington grew the plant at Mount Vernon.

Scientific research has shown CBD acts as a regulator of the Endocannabinoid System (ECS), a large neurotransmitter network that helps the body and brain communicate with each other. Cannabinoids such as CBD and other plant-based components interact with the ECS in order to create balance within the body, called homeostasis.

The ECS plays a role in regulating a variety of bodily functions, including:

Sleep/Wake Cycle

Movement

Cognition

Mood

Memory

Pain Perception

Metabolism

Appetite

Reproduction

Bone Growth

Immune Response

Pleasure Response

Research with THC and CBD has allowed researchers to significantly advance our understanding of human biology, health, and disease. In many ways, the Endocannabinoid System is a bridge for the conscious mind to make sense of its surrounding environment.

CBD HEALTH BENEFITS

Open tab

CBD can be used to promote health and wellbeing. Cannabinoids and the natural receptors found in the human body work much like a lock and key within the Endocannabinoid System (ECS), named after the plant compounds following extensive studies on how and why CBD and THC works in the body. Cannabinoid receptors found in so many places in the body, such as the gastrointestinal tract, immune cells and in the nervous system, are “turned on” to help get processes started and stay regulated when you take CBD, meaning they are crucial for optimal health.

Studies have shown CBD can boost immune system function, increase alertness, promote bone growth, and encourage healthy skin.  Ongoing research is studying the additional therapeutic potential of CBD and of the overall hemp plant. For example, hemp oil is a natural mood-lifter without psychoactive effects because of the neurotransmitter called anandamide, which is believed to relieve anxiety. Full-spectrum hemp oil actually stops enzymes from breaking down any unused cannabinoids that have yet to find a receptor, and therefore, makes more of the CBD available for use by your cells.

Due to the fact that CBD helps regulate the Endocannabinoid System (ECS), and this system helps to regulate many systems and functions in our bodies, studies have shown that CBD has the potential to provide all-natural relief for a variety of ailments, including:

Chronic Pain

Inflammation

Anxiety/Stress

Depression

Neurological Disorders

Migraines

Insomnia

Restless Sleep

Arthritis

Cramps

Seizures/Epilepsy

Diabetes

Current research, much of it sponsored by the U.S. Government, suggests that CBD benefits include:

Anti-inflammatory

Analgesic

Antioxidant

Antispasmodic

Antiemetic

Antipsychotic

Antiepileptic

Vasorelaxant

Immunosuppressant

Neuroprotective

Antimicrobial

Antifungal

At Sopris Health & Wellness, we test each batch of CBD oil used in our hemp CBD supplements, MCT oil with CBD, and topical CBD salve for heavy metals, toxins and THC levels to ensure each product is  effective and safe.

ABOUT SOPRIS HEALTH & WELLNESS CBD

Open tab

Our CBD comes from a single source hemp farm in Boulder County in Colorado. The hemp is grown naturally, free of pesticides and other contaminants and is tested for heavy metals and other toxins. What really sets our CBD apart is the extraction process.  CBD is extracted from hemp a number of ways. The common ways are to use ethanol, butane, or co2 to blast the CBD out of the hemp and convert to an oil.

Some extractions take the oil through an additional distillation process to produce what is referred to as CBD isolate. While convenient and efficient, these methods have several drawbacks, namely burning off terpenes and other cannabinoids found in the hemp that we believe play a part in the effectiveness of the CBD.

Our patented extraction method uses a low temperature, lipid infusion method that gently massages the CBD, other cannabinoids, terpenes, and plant waxes out of the hemp and into either organic coconut oil or MCT Oil derived from organic coconut oil.  This process is expensive and time consuming when compared to other options. We, however, feel this method of extraction delivers a substantially more effective product and is why we chose this process for our products.

WHAT IS FULL SPECTRUM CBD?

Open tab

The term “full spectrum” CBD refers to the presence of complimentary cannabinoids, plant waxes, and terpenes in the hemp extract, not just isolated CBD molecules. Research has shown that full spectrum hemp extract promotes what is known as the “entourage effect”. The entourage effect describes the synergistic nature of the cannabis plant magnifying the therapeutic benefits of the plant’s individual components. When CBD is produced as a full-spectrum extract, the medicinal impact of the whole plant is greater than the sum of its parts.

The  patented extraction formula that goes into  Sopris Health & Wellness products was designed to be full spectrum from the ground up, such as the low-temperature, lipid-infusion extraction method that gently massages CBD out of the hemp to maintain the maximum amount of original plant material.

We're not looking for just the CBD. We want all the wonderful properties of hemp to be present in our products, and stand by the quality of extractions we are able to produce thanks to having access to this patented-extraction process. That's why we feel full-spectrum extractions are a game changer for the industry.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HEMP AND MARIJUANA?

Open tab

While there is still some confusion about the difference between the two, hemp is completely different from marijuana in its function, cultivation and application. Marijuana, or weed as it is widely known, can be used for medicinal or recreational purposes, depending on your state laws.

Hemp, on the other hand, is used in variety of other applications unique from the marijuana plant, including healthy dietary supplements, skin products, clothing, building materials, and historically, rope. To date, hemp is able to be used in more than 25,000 ways.

A huge step forward for the industry came after the passage of the U.S. Farm Bill in 2014, enabling hemp cultivation by state departments of agriculture and higher-education institutes. As long as CBD has less than 0.3% THC levels, CBD is legal in all 50 states (as of the time this was published).  Sopris Health & Wellness tests every batch of full-spectrum CBD for heavy metals, contaminants and THC levels. We also ship to all 50 states.

WHAT IS MCT OIL?

Open tab

Our MCT Oil (MCT stands for medium chain triglyceride) with CBD is derived from organic coconut oil using a patented, lipid-infusion extraction method that gently massages the CBD out of the hemp plant. For practical purposes, organic MCT oil doesn’t become solid at room temperature like regular coconut oil, which is ideal for our dropper method. MCT oil has also been shown as an incredible source of Lauric Acid and Medium Chain Fatty Acids, which are easily digested and sent right to the liver as a fuel source for the body and brain. Lauric Acid is naturally antimicrobial, antibacterial and antiviral.

Our hemp oil is then dispensed using a 1 ml eye dropper containing 23 mg of full-spectrum CBD.  Sopris Health & Wellness Hemp MCT oil with CBD can be added to drinks and smoothies or taken orally. Letting the oil absorb under the tongue is an efficient delivery mechanism that delivers CBD directly into the bloodstream. The MCT Hemp Oil is a great option for people who have difficulty swallowing pills, don’t mind or enjoy the taste, are looking for faster absorption, or are seeking the energizing effect of the MCT Oil.

The reason why some people have found that our MCT Hemp Oil has an energizing effect is because caffeine binds to the oil allowing the CBD to move more quickly through the digestive system. We highly recommend using the MCT Oil with CBD in your morning coffee as an elevated “Bulletproof” coffee, traditionally made with MCT oil and butter or ghee. It is worth noting the energizing effect may be amplified when the body is in fasting mode, so be aware before taking the oil on an empty stomach before bed.

WILL CBD GET ME HIGH?

Open tab

Ours won’t. The ‘high’ many people experience when ingesting cannabis comes from the THC cannabinoid.  All of our products are derived from a proprietary strain of hemp that is very low in THC.

Sopris Health & Wellness products are all hemp extractions, tested for THC levels, and legal in all 50 states. Our hemp is tested to insure that the THC level is less than 0.3% of the total product volume.  Even though trace amounts of THC may exist, there is not enough in our products to produce an effect of intoxication.

WILL I FAIL A DRUG TEST FROM HEMP CBD?

Open tab

All full-spectrum CBD products contain trace amounts of THC. Federal law mandates that the amount of THC must be less than 0.3% of the total product, so all of our products are tested multiple times to ensure they are federally compliant.  According to research, unless you consume an unusually high dosage, more than 2,000 mg on a daily basis, research suggests that t is extremely unlikely you will fail a drug test.

Although the risk is low, the consumption of certain hemp products may lead to a positive drug test for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Due to  individual biochemistry, the possibility of conversion of cannabinoids and the possibility of trace, but legal, amounts of THC inherent in hemp products, we strongly suggest consulting your health care provider before consuming any hemp products if you are subject to drug testing.

HOW MUCH CBD SHOULD I TAKE?

Open tab

Each individual’s endocannabinoid system is different, so we recommend starting off with a smaller dosage and working your way up. A small dosage could be considered anywhere from 10 mg - 25 mg.  We typically see people with a larger body mass starting with 25 mg and people with a lower weight around 10 mg.

ARE THERE CBD SIDE EFFECTS?

Open tab

Clinical studies have shown CBD to be well tolerated, with little to no side effects at small doses. There has never been a recorded overdose related to any form of cannabis, even for strains containing high levels of the psychoactive THC cannabinoid. When taking very high doses, such as doses of CBD prescribed to cancer patients, some people have experienced headaches, nausea, and fatigue. In low doses, such as the formulations offered from Sopris CBD, these side effects are very unlikely to occur.

WHY IS SOPRIS CBD TESTED FOR HEAVY METALS?

Open tab

Sopris Health & Wellness CBD products are developed using hemp from a single source in Boulder County, Coloraod that is naturally grown and working on the multi-year process of organic certification. Another advantage of our source for hemp is that the land was previously used to raise pigs, meaning the soil is rich with nutrients and no pesticides were used for previous crops. We are proud to be Colorado grown and Colorado made.

For the same reasons you would buy organic produce at the grocery store or supermarket, we are dedicated to producing safe and effective hemp oils, topical salves, and daily CBD supplements with transparency through each step of the growing and making process. We test all CBD products for heavy metals and other toxins because the hemp plant will inadvertently absorb the pesticides into the finished CBD product if natural growing processes aren’t used or pesticides were used for other crops grown in the same area.

Hemp does an incredible job removing and cleaning up the pesticides or contaminants from the soil as a bioaccumulator, meaning it takes soil and air contents faster than they are excreted.  Pesticides from previous crops can unfortunately stay in the soil for years!

Many of the CBD products on the marketplace are derived from hemp grown in China, the world’s largest hemp producer, and other locations around the world that are under much less regulation regarding pesticides and heavy metals. Potential for soil contamination even in the U.S. is a concern since hemp will accumulate toxins faster than other plants, similar to other raw greens.

CAN I TAKE HEMP PRODUCTS OUT OF THE STATE?

Open tab

Yes!  All of our hemp oils, topical salves and CBD capsules contain less than  0.3% THC, and therefore, are classified as hemp extract making them legal in all 50 states.

Sopris Health & Wellness also offers free shipping to all 50 states for orders of $50 or more.

TAKING CBD WITH OTHER MEDICATIONS

Open tab

CBD inhibits the cytochrome P450 enzyme that is  involved in metabolizing many prescription drugs. Compounds in grapefruit inhibit the same enzyme group, which is why physicians advise patients not to eat grapefruit shortly before or after taking a medication.

By inhibiting cytochrome P450, CBD can either reduce or increase the effects of other drugs. In some situations, it may be advisable for a physician to monitor a patient’s blood levels of other medications while taking CBD products. Please consult a physician before taking any hemp products if you are currently taking other medication.
